This is an well worn copper Ottoman 20 para with a Greek countermark on both sides plus one other Ottoman countermark. From the limited researchI have been able to do, I believe the countermarks were applied for use on the Greek island of Lesbos while under Ottoman rule. Can anyone add any more information?

This was originally posted about a year ago without any responses. I have since learned that there is a book by Hans Wilski covering such pieces. I believe it is written in German. Does anyone have a copy which might aid in identifying and valuing this item?

Here you can see
Collection of Coins of the Ottoman Empire
Countermarked Coins of the Ottoman Empire 1880-1918 AD

Go to "Lesbos" and then to "Potamos" (Village of Lesbos) which is here

Concerning prices of this kind of coins, just to get an idea go to

For me, the value of the coin listed here is around 30-40 dollars.

Historically Lesbos is the island of the famous ancient female poet Sapho. She was supposed to be fond of women. Because of her birthplace (Lesbos) is the the origin of the word Lesbian we use today for a woman fond of women.

Thanks Nickos for your response and links. Do you know the circumstances of why they were countermarked in the first place and if they are official or private stamps?

Greece was under Ottoman Empire for many years. Greece declared independence in 1821 and as A Democracy in 1828 and then as Kingdom in 1832. first King was Otto.

For this transition period 1821 and later years, small towns of Eagean Islands like Lesbos, Thasos etc, started using their own currency/coins.
So they used ottoman's coins and STAMPED Greek letters so that to use them as Greek coins.

Were they official State coins? No.
Were they private coins? No.
Were they official territory coins? Yes.

They were official coins of the cities and communities for their transactions. Later, the State coins took the place of these coins.
