There are no copper coins I can hunt in my country right now but whenever I try to sort out copper-looking coins I go by ring.
Rest in Peace

Yes copper cents have that distinguishable dull look. most zincs don't.

I can tell most of the time. usually I go by "color" and the higher relief. But sometimes I get tricked by very dirty zincs or very shiny/lustrous copper cents.

Over the years from working with different types of metals I've become able to identify most common types of metals visually, sometimes even by smell too. Just takes a little practice.

I agree, the relief is a major tell for me.

I definitely guess right more often than wrong.

Zincolns are copper plated so I can't really tell by looking but I am almost always right by doing the drop test

The relief is the telltale sign for me in most cases.
