I have been a mostly dormant coin collector for about 20 years - as I moved on to other collecting interests (antique bottles, vintage brewery advertising.)

I do check my change and seem to find a few wheat pennies and a silver coin once a year or so....

Anyway - I found this odd 1969 D penny. It does not seem worn to this point - it just seems like an indistinct strike.

Is it acid dipped, wrong planchet, or none of the above. The edge seem to bow out convexly ever so slightly so that is why I wonder about the wrong planchet.

Thanks for any feedback.

Hope the pictures work....

The poor thing has suffered repeated small impacts that has flattened out the devises. It may have spent some time in a commercial clothes dryer. Post mint damage.

There are many of us just getting back into the hobby - any time is a good time!

Your coin looks like it may have a rough texture that would have me leaning towards environmental damage. It may be acid as you note but normally, the coin is reduced in thickness and rather than pitting, it has a more pocket like effect. It may also be a Greaser ( Grease Filled Die) that has spent some time in the ground collecting the environmental pitting. So a few things it could be.

A few better pictures and some further details about the coin surface would help. Enjoy the forums!!
