I was going through my dollars looking for errors and saw
this 1973 BU Nickel Dollar with nice Machine Doubling on
the obverse. Then seeing the die crack on the ETH of
ELIZABETH, I suspect Die Deterioration Doubling. In the
same area as the ETH above in the beads there is a crack
that connects quite a few beads.

Not sure on the mechanics of a BU strike, whether there are
one or two strikes. Looking for an explanation of how it
occurred. Any and all comments welcome.

I'm finding these die cracks are quite common on these large coins, but I really like them.

Nickel is a much harder metal than silver, so the probability of die cracks on nickel dollars is much higher than on silver dollars.

I often find these cracks between the beads on nickel dollars. I wonder if they used any die long enough for the crack to go around, since once a crack starts it just keeps growing faster and faster.

That's why I'm thinking Die Deterioration Doubling,
I mean the die had to be in bad shape.
