I went to about 10 banks yesterday, non of them had even a roll of halves. I did manage to find a loose 1967 and a 1977 proof but no one had rolls or boxes. How do you guys get your boxes and rolls?

Huh, I go to the bank and ask for a box, hand them $500, and I get one. Try to ask your bank to order one, they can. If they are too stubbern to order one, ask to see the head teller, who can get one for you.

You need to go to your bank, where you bank with then ask them to order you a box of half dollars. Be warn, not all banks can order halves and some will charge you for the order or future orders.

SSK, as we both know it's not as easy as some people have it. Neither of my two banks, and one credit union, can get them for me. I have asked all three and all tell me they can not order boxes of halves, and only get a few each week from their customers. Actually, I'm kind of getting a deal from my one bank, as they do order other coins (cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters) for me at face value. Normally I'd have to have a business account to get coins.

The only place I CAN get half dollar coins is from my former employer who deals with Loomis. Being in the retail business helps, but there still would be an added cost (maybe $50) to get a box of halves from Loomis.

Perhaps if they ever went back to circulation, the opportunity might come back, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's one of those things where you need to be polite yet stern with your approach. I tried getting a box of halves from 4-5 banks before finding "the one".

1) Banks usually don't carry those half dollar boxes on them and so they must order them. In my experience I have never been able to walk into a bank and get a box of halves without them being ordered special for me. Pennies, nickels, dimes, etc yes...halves no.

2) Some banks will attempt to tell you there will be a fee for ordering you a box special. Let them know that you are a customer and a member of that bank. You hold an account with them. Suggest to them to simply place it onto their weekly order. Don't do it if there will be a fee because they know that they can simply add it to their weekly order and not charge you.

3) Speak with either the head teller or a manager. The normal tellers usually don't know what to do if someone asks questions like that and they're unable to place the orders themselves. Find out who these "head tellers" are and sweet talk them.

4) Some banks may simply not order boxes for their customers. If all previous methods have been exhausted, you may need to try another bank.

Good luck.

I guess I got it made, my bank orders me a box every week, I just go in and pick it up, they never once mentioned a fee, all I had to do was ask, and thanks to this forum I bring them goodies around the holidays, like a dozen donuts or a platter of cookies.

Probably better than any box you end up with.
