Hello and welcome to the forum

Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news in answer to your first post here, but I'm afraid that if you look closely, you'll see the word "COPY" stamped into your coin, upside-down at the top of the right-hand-side picture. It's a replica of a Spanish-colonial gold coin. I'm sure if you got it tested, it wouldn't be solid gold.

It's the sort of thing mass-produced and sold as "pirate treasure" for kids to play with - or, in your case, to lose on a beach. Perhaps someone had played a "treasure hunt" game, scattering a bunch of them under the sand and then gave their kids a treasure map (or metal detectors) to find them - only they didn't find this one.

We've seen "beach finds" of replica Spanish coins on this forum so often, I've assumed "pirate-themed treasure hunts" are a common trend over in former pirate haunts; Florida, another florida, and the beaches of the Bahamas seem to earn more than their fare share of such reports.

If only it didn't comply with the Hobby Protection Act with that pesky word "COPY." The design mimics a Philip V, two reales silver coin from 1731 of Potosi, Bolivia with unsure assayer. The gold color is to make you believe this is a "pistole" or two escudo coin and not two bits. The date is somewhat after the great age of Pirates, but the spirit of cheating lives on. You would think they could find a Pistole of Philip IV to copy, which would be right for "pirate booty" me hardies. AAARRRRRGH!
