I was wondering what fellow coin collectors think or your opinion of Canadian Coin and Currency . Does Steve have too much influence with RMC , is he using the Shopping Channel to boost the sales of his own business ? I find that he over sells his product with a lot of not coin collecting items as demonstrated by the hockey Show Stopper , the coins in my opinion were not all that great ( all the same just different team colors and logo ) and a lot of extras as a coin collector I could care less to have . So what are your opinions or thoughts about the Coin Show and Steve ? Thanks for sharing .
PS this is not to be an attack on Steve it is just a pondering about the state of coin collecting and how it seems to be going mass market .

AFAIK, Canadian Coin and Currency store has nothing to do with Steve and Shopping Channel.

I don't care if the name of the thread has nothing to do with what it is about and I don't care that Steve uses the shopping channel to boost his sales. The coin show seems to have a lot of newer kind of coins, the ones they mint to collect like silver 5 dollar coins or gold 10 dollar coins and various themes from birds to landscapes. Its these kinds of coins I don't collect, also if I wanted to buy a full year set of coins I would not want it to be in a wooden case, I would want them to all be graded and those kinds of coins he doesn't seem to show often. He seems like a nice guy, I wonder how big his coin collection is. One time the other host was asking him why blank planchet errors are so important and he got kind of mad but knowing he was on air it looked like he was trying to hold back his frustration. Iv never bought anything from the shopping channel but if I did it would be a business strike coin. I guess I don't need to not care if the name of the thread is not what it is about anymore.

CCC is just like any other coin dealer to me, if I see a coin I want at the price I like I might buy it, if not I don't. I could care less who does or doesn't own it.

Quote: is he using the Shopping Channel to boost the sales of his own business ? Isn't that why people go on TSC? I use to watch the show just to see the coins but never bought anything. Some of the modern stuff is less than Issue price but it's usually something that wasn't popular to begin with, and you can probably pick it up on ebay for less. Most stuff seems to be top dollar. Not the place I'd go if I were looking for a bargain.

I have bought coins from the shopping channel. A lot of his stuff seems overpriced to me. However, there are times when he has some RCM coins that have been sold out, and in many cases he offers them for issue price. He has even offered RCM coins at below issue price. In most cases I will watch and not buy, but I do like seeing some of the coins he brings.

Steve Bromberg is a very shrewd businessman, who happens to enjoy the coin business. He is highly intelligent, and very good at what he does... It is not a secret that some of the larger dealers in Canada have influence at the RCM, even Gatewest admitted that they were proud to have influenced several NCLT coin designs. Mr. Bromberg was one of the buyers of the million dollar gold coin - it is pretty much analogous with any business relationship - when someone like that buys from you, spending that kind of money, you bend over backwards to keep your best customer happy. What is not seen, or known, is that Steve Bromberg is also someone who is very passionate about coins. He really likes all aspects of coins, and loves to learn about coins. He sat for almost 90 minutes at my table, chatting about errors and XRF instruments at the last Coin Expo - all the vest pocket dealers at the show saw this, and were mystified at what Steve was buying, or what I was trying to sell - but buying and selling never entered the conversation... it was a conversation of numismatics... I have a lot of respect for Steve, and that is a word I rarely use in the same sentence as 'coin dealer'.

I don't know him but I have watched hours of the Coin Show on TSC and I certainly have an impression of him. As a knowledgeable numismatist, I'm constantly surprised by some of the absolutely false and stupid comments he makes about coins. Let's just say he stretches the truth pretty thin quite often.
But I do enjoy watching the show to see the coins. I have bought some in the past but none were what I would call bargains...well maybe the 1999 gold proof toonie that came in a bundle about 10 years ago.
Anyway, my real concern with CC&C is their influence on coins being produced by the Mint. And really it's not just that one dealer. Sivertowne is doing it too and the Mint is complicit. It's my opinion, that if a dealer commissions a coin or series, and controls a significant portion of the mintage, then the Mint has an obligation to inform buyers. Not doing so is market manipulation and borders on price fixing. At best, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth especially when that dealer decides six months later to liquidate their inventory at 50% discounts.
PS Dear Steve, please...put on some gloves SMH.

Well said CC-Ottawa. It wouldn't hurt in the description of new coins adding a line like: 'this coin design submitted by....xxxx' furthermore, if that is the case, and that xxx has proprietary sales of say 80% of the mintage...this information would be nice to know. With regards to the Shopping Channel, my suspicion has always been that they buy up unsold mintages at greatly reduced prices. This way the mint at least breaks even, but despite not being 'sold out' at the time - the coins instead of being destroyed (or not manufactured) in the first place - keeps the mintages of less popular coins at full mintages. (all IMHO no facts referred or implied)
