After much research including your site I still cannot decide if a coin I have is extremely rare -- I doubt this very much but would like to know.

The coin is a 1890 melbourne mint victoria sovereign. The bit I do not understand is the spinks description that says 1890m extremely rare (normal jeb initials on trunc) what is normal jeb, normal jeb(angled j) spread jeb and legend G: of D:G: closer to crown.
If it is just a normal one I think the value is around £150

Thanks
Mark

G'day, you'll have to track down some pics of other 1890M sovs, in order to compare them to yours.
If you look on E-bay, you might be lucky enough to find some good pics, over a few weeks. I note that, right now, there are nine 1890 sovs, that's all mintmarks.

JEB - Look at the obverse: see below the Queen's left shoulder, about 5.30 position, are the letters JEB. These are the sculptor's initials. Compare the shape, orientation, spacing, etc of yours to any others you can find.

D:G: - look at obverse, the legend, about 11 o'clock. "Dei Gratia" is commonly abbreviated to "D:G:". Again compare to others.

The trouble with our hobby is that when we say "wide" or "narrow", no-one can give them a meaning, until you put one next to the other.

I don't know enough about 1890 sovs and their varieties to be of specific help.
