I have a 2003 British 2 Pence piece and when I looked it up in Krause it said there are two varieties:

KM#987
Copper Plated Steel

KM# 987a
Bronze

How do I tell which I have?

I can provide pictures if it would help someone to discern between the two.

Without looking anything up, 'cause I'm just wasting time on the computer and munching on some lovely Satay chicken, I'd say the best way to determine them is going to be weighing them. Krause probably lists weights for both coins.

There is probably a visual difference between the bronze and the copper plate, but I couldn't tell you which was which, myself. ;)

Yup, the magnet will work.

Apparently, the switch wasn't widely publicised. There was a story in NewScientist magazine, printed at around the time the British switched from bronze to plated steel coinage. A science schoolteacher was explaining to the class about magnetism, and how some metals were magnetic and others weren't. To demonstrate, he took a powerful magnet and and pulled from his pocket a 2p coin, just like he'd done in previous years in demonstrating this. On placing it next to a magnet, he was surprised and more than a little embarrassed when his "copper" coin flew to the magnet and stuck there, contrary to what he'd just predicted it wouldn't do.

Science teachers should read coin magazines more often.

It was bound to be steel. The copper ones are a special production because people will always buy them if they have been specially made out of the 'original' (and proper) stuff...
