Could someone discuss the history behind this tray? (The copper section at the center is about 1 5/8" across; the brass tray is about 4 1/2" across).

Thank you,

P.S. - Sorry for the poor image. In actuality, one really thinks there is a real copper coin lying in the center of the dish.

The dish seems to have started life as a scale pan. That is, the side of a grocer's scale upon which the weights were placed. The pan holding the goods would be shaped somewhat like a scoop.
I believe that Avery although having diversified greatly, are still producing weighing equipment today.

Here's a place to start. In 1797, the Bank of England started issuing Spanish silver coins as currency, with a tiny countermark. The little marks were counterfeited, and the experiment was failing, so they contracted Boulton in 1804, who offered a counterstamp that covered the whole face of the coin.

I should have more specific. That is, I was wondering how a South African company (S. A. Scale Co) got involved with this old coining Die.
