Okay, my fathers birthday is coming up soon and I'm not sure what to get him. His birth year is 1955 so I was thinking proof set? The flat pack not the box? He is not all that into coins he collects Tiffany Studios things that are a bit out of my price range. I'm going to work now but please leave me any suggestions on anything, looking to spend between $100-300. Oh he does like old notes like colonial currency, thanks for the help!

Might I recommend a very nice example of a 1928 $20 Gold Certificate? Either that, or a nice $100 1966 U.S. note. National Currency is also very good.

I hope that this helps...

-Ben
P.S. - Happy birthday to your father.

I'm giving my mom a set of coins from her mom's birth year. I like giving non-coin collectors sets/coins from their birth year or for a year that has some significance for them. Maybe you could get your dad a 1955 double die penny . Just kidding (it's a bit pricey), but a mint set might be nice.

Also nice is a coin with a Tiffany's art glass design by the Republic of Palau - search ebay coins for "Tiffany" and you'll find it (there are probably other venues to by this as well). I think some other countries have made coins with Tiffany's themes as well.

Good luck and hope your dad enjoys whatever you get him!

My personal experience is: Buy/give them what they like/interest. Because you can spend a lot of money to buy the coin (ie: a valuable item in your eye) - that doesn't really matter. What matter the most is how valuable is the item, in the eyes of the holder/keeper.

I bought some nice current silver coins at melt prices from people that got them as gifts but doesn't collect coins or not into coin collection. I also bought my dad a pretty nice watch made by Citizen for one of his BD then I bought him very nice cologne at another time; guess what: he NEVER use them!

To sum it up: If you dad like Note, get him a good one (especially one that he's looking for/missing). Your dad like Tiffany Studios things but exactly what is it that he's hanging on to (ie collecting/keeping); if he doesn't have any coins or not into coins then a coin with Tiffany theme/design may not be enough for him to treasure/value it. You want to get him things that he will use/keep for a long time, not something that he will put away in a corner of a drawer and then sell at below value on a latter date. Think about "value in your dad term"!

I'm getting my Dad a fleece headband that holds his baseball caps on in the winter. I might also get him a hand-held lighted electronic Sudoku game. If I got him a coin, he'd just sell it to buy more heroin or crack.

Gold Certificates, you've piqued my interest. What's up with the '66 Benny?

Buy something that your dad likes. If he collects Tiffany Studio items give him a book on the subject with a nice inscription from you.
