Last week I came across a series of auctions for Barber quarters, all in slabs from "Numismatic Grading Service", whoever they are . . . or were. All were graded MS-63 to MS-67 and none of them even came close. Most were Very Fine at best.

The seller, to his credit, made it very clear that all the coins were from a basement slabber and not the grade on the label.

I did bid on one, this 1897, to which NGS assigned a lofty "MS-67" grade. I was the only bidder and won the coin for $37. It looked like it might be a decent EF to AU. The seller and I traded some friendly emails about this coin and the others.

I got it today, took some photos and promptly "liberated" it from the slab. It does look to be an EF coin, maybe a bit better. The reverse is quite nice. It still has a lot of luster and no harsh cleaning marks. There are some circulation marks. I'm not sure if it's been dipped or not; I'm not good enough to determine that.

But, for $37, I don't think it was a bad buy.

You would think these basement scam slabbers would at least show a little restraint and grade it maybe high AU or something. MS-67 just makes you laugh and cry at the same time.
Rest in Peace

The way to defeat the basement slabbers is to buy their stuff up at true grade value and crack it. Plenty of defunct slabs sloshing around the market, helping to perpetuate the idea that many "legitimate" slabbers exist. This is just one small necessity in the broader fight against them.
