Last week I came across a series of auctions for
Barber quarters, all in slabs from "Numismatic Grading Service", whoever they are . . . or were. All were graded MS-63 to MS-67 and none of them even came close. Most were Very Fine at best.
The seller, to his credit, made it very clear that all the coins were from a basement slabber and not the grade on the label.
I did bid on one, this 1897, to which NGS assigned a lofty "MS-67" grade. I was the only bidder and won the coin for $37. It looked like it might be a decent EF to AU. The seller and I traded some friendly emails about this coin and the others.
I got it today, took some photos and promptly "liberated" it from the slab. It does look to be an EF coin, maybe a bit better. The reverse is quite nice. It still has a lot of luster and no harsh cleaning marks. There are some circulation marks. I'm not sure if it's been dipped or not; I'm not good enough to determine that.
But, for $37, I don't think it was a bad buy.
