The time period after the death of Constantine I to the Battle of the Fridigus , is becoming one of my favorites periods to study. I am currently reading a good book, A.D. 381, its about our favorite old zealot Theodosius.

Oh heck Talk about the guy who helped bring about the end of antiquity! . A modern equivalent of Theodosius, would probably be that zealot Robert Mugabe. Still nice coins VK.

One reason for my hatred of him though is his relative intolerance of the Jewish and Pagan faiths. Also his code of law would be the basis for bigotry, superstition, and murder for hundreds of years after the fall of Rome.

But many other rulers throughout history have been intolerant towards other groups and had left legacies of terror (not that I think Theo did, for the last one). There's got to be more to your vitirol towards him than that. But according to you its complicated, so...

Is that the same Theodosius who did that whole Massacre of Thessalonica debacle? If so, yeah, I can kind of understand where you're going (though I still think that comparing him to Mugabe is undeserved). If not, well, there's no shortage of awful rulers in antiquity anyway (Elagabalus for one).

Glad to hear from you January! Yes that Theodosius. While this is not the full enchilada of why I can't stand him, this is most of it. Theodosius issued an empire wide attack on pagans, then jews later on. At that time the Empire needed unity and concord between its people and army ; he was basically pouring petrol and lighting matches on it. Even more depressing is that he is responsible for the destruction of countless priceless temples and books. ex. The Serapeum at Alexandria, the Temple of Apollo, and the Temple of the Vestal Virgins. These were the cults that defined Rome, heck they even predated the Republic for pete sake. Also he outlawed the Olympic games, and is partially responsible for the destruction of Antiquity. To top things off he is a "saint" in some denominations.

I have some good news! I finally found out what a Siliqua was worth/ what it could buy ! From http://antiquainc.com/site/php/guss...ts_hoard.php"From near contemporary historians we learn that a soldier was paid at the rate of two siliquae a day, around the year 400."Wow thats pretty neat!

Can't help but feel the need to say this. I don't mind you having an opinion on the man but when you feel the need to constantly mention and remind people about your feelings towards him, that's when it gets a bit ridiculous IMO. I feel like I can't even say his name without you jumping in and saying something. You got to tone it down. Might sound unlikely, but someone might join up who really likes Theo and takes serious offense at what you say.
I don't think Theo was all bad and like January said, there are plenty of bad and worse rulers throughout history. I'd certainly rather have Theo than a Caligula, an Elagabalus, or a Stalin.
