I'm planning on trading some bank notes( not great shape say F V) and NCLT among other things for some older coins . I would like to be fair with the guy I'll be dealing with as well as to myself. I've heard of using Trends as a guide , ( for e.g. 75% of what Trends says the value of a coin is), that sort of thing. If that's how its done then what % is fair for all? Is there a standard? I suppose there could also be a disagreement over grade.

I would sure be grateful for any thoughts or opinions, I haven't traded since the school yard and that was a long long time ago.

I just traded 23 movie posters for 20 McPuffin tokens. I think you might be over thinking it. If he wants something and you have it and he has something you want make the trade. If his thing is worth $50 try to figure out if you have something in the $40-$60 range and offer it as a trade.

Try to get a deal, aim for 60% if you can. If you have a good repoir you will win some and loose some with him and it should equal out to a 1:1 ratio over time.

I think fair trade is when both parties are happy with what they got, do some home work and be prepared to make an offer which you think is good value.

Trends is off on their prices... the catalogs are off on their pricing... and if you get too fixated on that the negotiations spiral and it doesn't work out for either person..

The best trades I've done I try to make it fair for both. I look at what the possible value of your own items... then give a possible value for the other person's ...

Sometimes even when the guides are off on their true dollar amounts it can help to use those just to say... the book value of my stuff is $100 bucks... book value of your stuff is $100... fair swap...

If you're trading then just agree on which price list to use and then value each trade item from that list. coinsandcanada has price lists for both coins and bills. Also a picture based grading guide that can help resolve disagreements. Charlton Vol 2 is best for NCLT.

Over the years I found two fair ways to TRADE that should be fair. First Trend for Trend or second wholesale to wholesale. If you are trading as two collectors the first is really fair. The second gets a bit complicated if you are trading with a dealer. Good luck!
