I'm not sure what to do with this cent I've had for a while. If it weren't for the corrosion and what appears to be environmental damage, it's in pretty good shape. What would you do with it?

Maybe offer it to a newbie to hook them into old copper?

I would upgrade it to a solid 1853 for my collection and then I would find a kid collector, give it to them and watch their face light up.

Treat it with an application of Verdi-CareŽ and keep it! Aside from the slight corrosion from verdigris the details are fantastic.

Sorry but that corrosion is more than slight. Verdi-Care will arrest the corrosion but it will leave heavy pitting behind.

Hey, if you are emotionally attached to it (and I can certainly understand that,) give it a little acetone soak and a Verdicare treatment, and it will certainly look better, and you'll have the Verdicare you purchased for future use. Always fun to experiment. Dr Frankenstein signing off

The pitting is already visible. Verdi won't reveal anything that isn't already prominently evident. If your still dead set on getting rid of this coin, shoot me a message. If properly treated this coin has potential... I think some TLC could yield a good result.

Who said anything about getting rid of the coin? I'm wondering what, if anything, you would do with the coin (ie: properly treating with TLC). I actually think it is a beautiful coin, and would like to improve it. I also like the idea of giving it to a kid... I have a 9 year old that would treasure it.

Edit: I should add that I appreciate all of your answers, thanks.

Verdi-Care won't solve this as it's always going to be a details coin. 1853 Large cents are very reasonably priced in VF-XF condition.

I agree with Amida17 - maybe stop by a local coin show and make some young collector very happy I did it recently and it makes you feel really good about yourself and the future of the collecting hobby.

Try soaking it in olive oil. That's what they do to old roman coins that have been buried. I'm a large cent specialist so my suggestion to replace it was just what I would do.
