I have these two wheats that are in bad shape and I can't identify. I think the one on the right might be 1909, but tough to say and certainly too tough to say if S and/or VDB. The corroded one is anyone's guess. Never thinking these are going to be valuable, but would like to identify for my own knowledge. Any thoughts on if deciphering is possible?

Thanks!

The pictures look as bad as the coins
Once the surface of the coins has been removed you can't put it back... Maybe try Nic-A-Date? I have never used it and it is primarly used for the date on Buffalo nickels. Not sure if it will work on the cent but may be worth a shot.

Try a soak in acetone.

I really like how you've framed the question, CENT, because this is an extreme case. It lets the point be made that much of what may or may not be discussed here is only for extreme cases.

Not that it matters much for copper any more, because there's stuff like Verdi-Care which is not only decent with lesser problems but as effective as anything which will not otherwise obliterate the coin. So, that's your answer here. Had we been talking about silver, other nefarious methods would have been in play.

Seriously, you can use more or less acidic stuff to help recover the coins, but in the end it won't get you any farther than Verdi-Care. May sound like a commercial but Thad's concoction works.

Thanks for the thoughts. I wasn't going to post pictures but figured someone would then ask. Point wasn't to solicit guesses on the dates, but mostly to show extent of damage. I think that's evident enough despite low quality pictures.

I do agree but, why not a dip in acetone to get rid of the organics then Thad's preservation? Got a bottle of the Verdi Chem in front of me.
Cent, hope it is a 1909 S VDB.
