(I don't know if this is one of those forums that frowns on posting to a regular thread before doing an introduction.) Anyway: I started collecting US coins in the fall of 1958, when my father gave me a old slick Barber half dollar that he got in change. Before this, I hadn't really paid much attention to coins, but this coin was "different", and I became curious. I started a 20th century US type collection, with coins from grabbed from circulation (plus a couple of silver dollars from circulation that my parents had given me before). I had no albums or coin books, so I taped the coins to a cardboard, and gradually worked out what types and denominations existed (no gold coins, though). Eventually, I got books and albums, etc. and collected US coins up until the mid 1990s, when the coins I was interested in became too expensive. In more recent years, I've concentrated on bullion -- mostly pre 1933 "junk gold" (US and foreign).

pepactonius: to the CCF! I started out in numismatics in much the same way as you did and in about the same year: 1958. By about the mid 1960's, I asked myself: 'What sorts of coin series could I collect that it would be impossible to complete the series?' I decided to study ancient coins, but have long since branched out into medieval and hammered coins, then into World coins to keep costs down.

Hello & ! I frequently see pictures of old coins with tape marks & think to myself "why in the world would someone do that?"...Now I know.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Quote: Hello & ! I frequently see pictures of old coins with tape marks & think to myself "why in the world would someone do that?"...Now I know. Of course, none of the coins I had taped to the cardboard were obtained from coin stores or "old" - they were all obtained from circulation, even the silver dollars. In the 1950s, in California, you'd get the occasional silver dollar in change. My parents saved any they got, since they were uncommon enough to be a curiosity. The last one I recall seeing in change was at the Louisville, KY airport probably in 1957 or early 1958.
