Out of my 37 years of collecting, I only sold some coins once. I had purchased an estate that had a complete set of Franklins in it. However, I already own a MS set. So, when silver hit $31.15 an ounce, I sold it to purchase a couple of coins for my Type Book album.

I too sell some coins to fund some purchases of nicer or different type of coins. For instance, I recently upgraded my Morgan dollar in my 7070 (thank you Vermontensium) and so I see no need to keep the other 1921 Morgan. But then again my preference is having many types of coins rather than many of one (except Kennedy halves I love them). Maybe someday that will change but for the most part I never regret selling to upgrade in some way.

Yes, to answer your question I would sell less nice stuff that I wasn't interested in to get a few nicer things that I am interested in. I wouldn't bother myself with the price of silver personally because I would be targeting investment-grade pieces that will do well over time. The sooner you buy that stuff, the better, because it's ALWAYS going up.
