Congressman Sean Duffy(R-Wis) is going to try and stop operation "ChokePoint". "ChokePoint" is an attempt to intimidate financial institutions from offering financial services to certain licensed, legally operating industries the government doesn't like in an attempt to choke off those industries from our country's banking system. These include the nondepository lending industry, ammunition and firearms sales, fireworks sales, tobacco sales, coin dealers, debt collectors, pawnbrokers and pharmaceutical sales:

Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) has introduced an amendment to stop the Government from enforcing "ChokePoint", by blocking the funding.

"industries the government doesn't like" "These include ... coin dealers"
The government doesn't like the industry that enables them to unload ton after ton of overpriced novelty bullion? The ACA looks silly here.

OK, I'll admit that I'm clueless here but I joined this forum to learn. So, coin dealers are evil because they buy and sell coins?

It's far better press to say "the government doesn't like us" than "the government is cracking down on industries which have demonstrated the willingness and ability to launder money and fence stolen goods." The article linked is from the official trade association of one of those industries.

Apparently some governmental drones got overzealous.

Legitimate coin and bullion dealers have nothing to worry about.

Heck, if legitimate dealers had anything to worry about before, they don't now. Capitol Hill has their teeth in the issue, and they're going to thrash it like a chew toy until everyone involved is afraid to even take their hands off the table.

Fortunately, the new congress will not let "ChokePoint" take effect. Coin dealers were only included in this list to help obfuscate the real meaning of "ChokePoint"......to target gun dealers. The IRS and DOJ seem to have an agenda of targeting Americans they disagree with and coin dealers got caught-up, perhaps unintentionally, on their enemies list. Cipster from what I've read the intended targets are businesses which are legal but which some people in the government consider predatory. Payday loan sharks, smoke shops, gun shops, and storefront scrap metal "coin" dealers for instance. I doubt that the intent is to target the evil predators selling counterfeit coins, or to target collector coin dealers. I don't think hobbies like coin collecting are on their radar. If they were, they'd be after ebay.
