Hello,

What do you think of the grade on this coin?

Thanks in advance!

Wow what a great coin! I love post colonial copper. I feel that the sharpness grade on this coin would be an EAC 35 which would correspond to a market grade of about EF-40. One of the TPGs might give it a "details" grade because of the light porosity.
As far as an attribution my question is; does this coin have a lettered edge? If I find that out I can give you a better idea of the die variety.

Only one set of obverse/reverse dies were used on the 1795's. However, as Celtic alluded there are several varieties of edge lettering....Whats yours say?
As for grade I think I would go a bit lower and say low VF.

Thanks a lot for your quick responses
The edge on the coin reads; 'we promise to pay the bearer one cent'

Very cool coin. Looks about EF40 to me also.

Just wanted to add.....beautiful piece. Likely a lot of strike weakness. This mid grade example is exactly how I like these future donors to the U.S. half and large cents of 1795 and 6. (some were used as planchets for Federally issued coppers)

A poster showed a pic like a month ago that showed a 1797 Half Cent struck over a Talbot Allum and Lee token that showed the lettering from the original token clearly.

Actually called Cents, they were actually tokens minted in Birmingham, England for the firm.
I'd put this one at VF30 details. Nice eye appeal..porosity is minimal and granular.

Celtic, I thought about mentioning that also. That was an awesome coin. The poster was WillyB, and the coin was a 1797 Half Cent on page 2 of this thread...
