I am wondering if that is crud on the coin. Wandering what would happen if I soaked it in acetone.

XF40, not sure if this would get details or not. The field doesn't look like a typical "from the ground" coin IMO. The devices of the motto & date are far too sharp.

I actually have a quarter with a similar looking reverse. I soaked it in acetone and it came off. Of course there are purists who think you shouldn't even do that.
