A coin dealer I recently bought a coin from sent me this fake dollar (unsolicited) when he mailed me the coin I bought. What does the CCF recommend I do with it? I don't want it. I certainly don't want it left with my collection for my ancestors to discover after I'm gone, and maybe be fooled into thinking it's authentic. I suppose I could just throw it in the trash... Note: It has medal orientation, front to back.

Probably a base metal, not silver.

If you really don't want it I would take it in a heartbeat! It would help me to see what is not authentic when buying one in the future. Completely up to you though I wouldn't throw it at all though.

Get it to Steve Caruso at the Black Cabinet. Mister Kairu, better for it to be in a counterfeit database where everyone on the Internet can benefit from the information.

Oh I see. I did not know there was such a thing. You are right, though, better to send it there so it can help more than just one person!

Send it to Steve and he's got a COPY punch he's nicknamed "justice" and he'll stamp the word COPY on it so it isn't confused for the real thing again. Steve Caruso's web site is here: http://www.theblackcabinet.org

It is a nice looking fake .... Does it have reeded or lettered edge.
We see a few of them come in with reeded edge.
I agree with others .. Would be nice to have it marked as copy/fake

Quote: I agree with others .. Would be nice to have it marked as copy/fake Once it's exhaustively researched and imaged, of course. Chances are Steve already has an example of this specific fake but the effort is ongoing and new ones surface all the time.

As everyone else has said, even though it looks like a variety I have a specimen of, I'll be glad to take it off your hands and ensure that it's properly documented, marked, and removed permanently from circulation. If you can also provide me with the circumstances where the coin dealer got it (anonymously if they wish) I'm trying to keep track of where these things are circulating. All the info on sending things in is here: http://www.TheBlackCabinet.org/submissions/

And a nice finish to it all, a nice email back from Steve: Quote:Moe, I would like to extend my gratitude at your generous donation to The Black Cabinet's stacks. They arrived on my desk a few days ago, and over the next week I'll be putting them into the database and marking them, and you'll be getting the credit line for any new varieties. :-) Peace and thanks! -- Steve Caruso, MLIS (GSNA R-2306) Curator, The Black Cabinet http://www.TheBlackCabinet.org
