It's not the worst job I've seen. :-) But with the growing number of these popping up on ebay and elsewhere, I think it's time to put together an article on how to identify them.

This one I think is rather Easy. The length of the second one is the dead giveaway for me. Its longer than the first 1, and just so happens to be the same length as the 4. I do love the description though, "A great candidate for submission for professional grading. I also offer a 5 day return option, however the coin will come inside a flip holder security sealed. If the seals are broken you forfeit your option to return the coin." So once you send it to be graded and your told its a damaged 1944, then you cant return it.

SteveCaruso, If you do put together an article consider mentioning that the Lincoln Cents in 1944 were made from Shell Case copper. On a high grade 'example' the color of the metal would be another clue to identification.

I'm not sure how much color difference you are going to see between a coin with a composition of 95% copper and 5% of two silver colored metals (tin and zinc), and one with a composition of 95% copper and 5% of one silver colored metal (zinc). There may be a SLIGHT color difference, but would it be consistent, and how do you describe it? Pictures? Can you accurately reproduce the slight color variation? Will it be visible on different computer screens?

And if the experiment succeeds, Steve, you will have done yet another service to collectors everywhere.

Since when was it possible so generalize about the color of a coin? And are you generalizing about Red examples or Brown? Would RB then be the wrong color for authenticity? And which monitor is better calibrated for color - yours, or the thousands of different people all with different monitors who would have to see precisely the same shade of color for this research to have academic value?

AND if your interested, you could check with an eye doctor about the differences we all see depending on the color of the Iris of the eye. If your Iris is very light, blue, green, brown, dark, etc. all effect what we see and how we see that. As light passes past the Iris, that light is effected by the Iris's color so what one sees is not exactly the same as others with different color Iris's.

Several types of color blindness and tetrachromacy... Dang I'm gonna have a lot of test and control groups. :-)
Or perhaps I need to find a more elegant approach?
