The 1954 Lincoln Wheat in the top left, was given to me many years ago. I know nothing of it's background. It looks like some sort of corrosion on the front, and a dark circle on the back. Could it be a proof?

Coated with something, quite likely mercury which can form an amalgam with copper. It was a popular school science project back then, and we see them frequently here.
Just one of the many coins kids or even some adults plate. It is done for fun and some do it for profit. With the 1943 Cent, they are plated with Zinc, Chrome, Tin, Copper and maybe Silver but not sure why anyone would do that. Fun to find those though.
