I see a reference for coins with filed rims and picture a scene of someone using a file to sharpen or dull the rim.

On gold coins, some dishonest people would file the edge to remove gold. Reeding or other treatments on the edge was to try to eliminate this practice. Not sure what that phrase would mean on modern or clad coins.
