Hello. I have 15 or 20 low grade ancient coins that I have bought over the past year because they were cheap, and I was bored. I am thinking of trying to get a bit more serious about ancient collecting though. Questions: 1. I know of an old copper ebay seller (Kevin Vinton 'indeetlib') who has coins everywhere from $20 - $2500. I spend at least an hour or so browsing his shop every week. I would be happy to have any of the 297 coins he has listed right now. The vast majority of his coins are mid grade - $50 - $200. Can you tell me an ancient coin ebay seller, or any online ancient marketplace that would be similar? 2. Do you think I'd be ok just looking at coins and thinking "hey, that one sure is weird, I don't know what it is, but I'll buy it", or should I really get concentrated on a specific type or area before I ever start buying? 3. Do you get annoyed with extremely dark ancient coins? Some of the ones I have are so dark it's really difficult to tell what they even are without shining a light directly on them. I don't like that. Maybe I should focus in silver? 4.What's the deal with that 'highrating_lowprice' guy? He has a few hundred coins in lower grades than mine at around 20x what I paid. Is there not a dedicated thread on this guy? Gotta love that picture of himself he uses as an avatar. 15,000+ sales and 99.9% positive feedback? 5. These are some coins I'm eyeballing. What do you think of them and their prices? Don't guess there's any chance of finding an Athena owl in higher grade at the price point? That's about the only one I could find at the price point at all. 1. $95 - I love the astronomy here, but I don't think I'll buy this one. I've bought from the seller before, and I'm pretty sure this coin will be jet black in hand :( 2. $295 3. $295 4. $295 5. $295 6. $295 Edited by scottk 03/29/2015 1:00 pm

Ok, vcoins is good.
Ask as many questions as you want, I have an old Sassanian thread that goes on for about 8 pages.
As for buying coins you ew and awh over that is a good start. That is probably how you got started in moderns before you figured out your niche, eh?
I don't buy copper/bronze for the reason you mentioned. Silver siglos for me.
I was lucky in that I was attracted to Persia and Cyrus the Great, the caliphates, Zoroastrianism and the rise of Islam. Give it time and you will find a certain piece of history to latch on to.
As we always say buy the book before the coin. I have two Persian coins and am busy buying old catalogs and literature.
I find Sap, ancientnoob, Bob L, top cat and all the other heavy posters in this sub-form to be a wealth of information and friendly to talk with. Good luck.

1) There are many big sellers on ebay, but you can also look at vCoins. It isn't auctions, but they have a ton of coins from different sellers there. 2) Collect however makes you happy, but it is good to at least research a coin a bit to make sure you're not paying way too much. You don't need to settle on one era or area though; a lot of people have eclectic collections of things they think look cool, including me. 3) Not all ancient bronze coins are like that, although quite a few are. The picture in the auction should represent what the coin looks like when you receive it. If it doesn't then you should ask for a refund from the seller and possibly not buy from them again. 4) I don't know what that guy's deal is. I guess he just lists a ton at high prices (13k active listings right now!) and enough people that don't know better bite and buy them for him to keep going. Regarding the coins you posted, if the first one turned out to be dark then the seller is intentionally misrepresenting his coins. If you've bought from him and the picture looked like that but the coin was dark in hand you definitely should not buy from them. 2, 3 and 4 and pretty expensive for those types, but are in great condition so the price may make sense. I don't know enough about those types to say for sure. Also check the size on 4, if it's the type I think it is then the coin is very tiny. 6 is a little expensive but has great detail on the reverse. I'd want to either know that it's from a reputable dealer or see closer pictures though because something about the coin seems a little off to me. The Athenian coin you can do better than at that price range. Keep an eye on Vcoins and some other sellers (forvmancientcoins, civitas galleries) and you'll be able to pick one up at that price that doesn't have a big hole in the reverse. Civitas has one right now that I'd grade higher at $235 (can't figure out how to link.) Don't be scared off by all the 4 figure price tags you'll see when looking at these coins either; they're popular so a lot have a bit of fantasy pricing going on, but keep your eyes peeled and you'll find something decent.

Well, I know a dealer in ebay that is starting to sell in the USA, his nickname is morcillom. he has now three tetradrachms on ebay auction (one athenian owl and two Alexander the great). He lives close near me so I have some degree of friendship with him; He´s a good dealer.

Strange those sellers Buckeye listed don't show up in my search results. I have to go in and manually hit "search other countries" every time just to see their items.

well, he is my "neightbourg" if that term can be applied to two persons that live at the same island (Ibiza, spain). I met him in a "hippie market" one year ago, in front a lot of ancient roman coins and we started to talk about our common hobbie... Since that moment we started a friendship (he is doctor, I´m naval officer) and two weeks away, in front of two beers I said: (sorry for the sentence in spanish but I think that perhaps it´s better not to translate here only to say that I challenged him to sell his coins in USA too) two beers later he was starting to sell coins in ebay USA... I must say that he is very serious and a good dealer This is an English language forum, please use English only

I follows him too... But I must say that I have a great advantage... 1.- I can see the lot that he bought BEFORE he sales them. 2.- When I win a lot, he carries the coin to the hippie market so I save the "Post-sending" money And one great disadvantage... ...when he does so, I usually pay the beer.

1. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'd advise anyone new to ancients to stay well away from ebay. Far too many sellers on ebay are selling fakes, or mis-identified items, or simply making you pay a high price for small change. 2. I don't see a problem with that; that's pretty much a good summary of my collecting "strategy". Of course, it does help to have some experience with ancients and/or to buy only from sellers that know what they're doing, so you aren't led down the garden path by a seller that is either deceitful or ignorant. You won't find them here in the ancients section (because we move their threads elsewhere) but we get quite a lot of people coming here with threads like "I found/bought this ancient coin, can you ID it for me" and it turns out to be a British penny or a Canadian token or an old military button or something else non-ancient-coin-like. 3. No. Ancient coins aren't supposed to look bright and shiny. 4. He is an example of why what I said in Question 1 holds true. He's not on the FORVM fake sellers list so his coins are probably all genuine. But they are not necessarily identified correctly, and they certainly are not "low price". As Dilbert's Boss once said, "There's no law against optimism".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

3 is a really nice coin. Any idea what would cause the flan to have those things sticking out? A remenent of when the flan was cast?

I like #3 also. After reading y'alls posts, I'm thinking that I will concentrate on silver coins from bc. I don't think I'm buying any of these though. I was just window shopping, and $295 is a bit pricy for me at the moment. The ebay seller is 'parscoins' if any of you are interested. Scott.

Perhaps "before running, you must learn to walk"... I think that they are beautiful coins but, very expensive ones to start a collection.

Just an FYI, but that Athens Owl I posted above went for just under $180 US$ delivered.
Shame it had the giant hack in it. She was beautiful even with someone splitting the Owl's head.
If you are wanting BC coins, I would start out with the Greek coins. The Roman silver coins get pricier in the BC years. Not that I am qualified to judge pricing yet, or better even value.
