Can anyone give the guideline to grade this coin 1893 Columbian Exposition Commemorative?
What are the grading criteria for each grade, ranging from G - EF?
Anyone have a price list/sheet for those grades (G-EF)?
Counterfeit - How to detect counterfeit / what are the important marker/characteristics of the coin that can help in detect counterfeit?

There is one on gunbroker.com that is EF-40 graded by PCI it has lots of tarnish on it, and I bought 2 from mintproducts.com for $11.00 each and they are in about the same condition as the one on gunbroker.

The 1893 Columbians are plentiful enough that damaged or VF and lower grade coins are worth close to silver melt value. They are inexpensive through MS-63 but not many survive in higher grades so they get pricey on the high end.

Here is what you DON'T want.... Cleaned, dipped out with no luster...I grade it vf35 I picked it up with a nice AU one a while ago, both for $20  Edited by morganman

I have one off at ANACS now that should grade either PO1 or FA2....It's one of my fave pieces...I'll try to post pics when I get it back, if anyone is interested.

I have a 1892 and 1893 which I think I paid $10 and $15 for a couple years ago. They were not graded and I picked them up at an antique mall. Since I just dabble and wanted them to go with my WCE admission ticket collection, price wasn't a big issue.

Very helpful thread for me , I want to start a small select collection of inexpensive commemorative silver pieces and had one of these in my sights , it looks to close to the one pictured that I dont want for my comfort ..hope I dont get stuck with it , theres another much nicer but costs more.

Oh Dear .. looking at all the pictures I wonder exactly what ive done. I did manage to win a couple of auctions for this coin.How much scarcer is the 1892 opposed to the 1893 ? Seems to be plenty of the 1893 ones around. Im new to commemoratives , ill post a picture tonight of my first ones and a link to an auction that has me heartbroken. A sad tale of misery and woe at not knowing what the heck I'm doing when it comes to commemoratives..i was watching the oregon trail coin and also a 2001 buffalo silver dollar. I was more interested in the oregon trail coin and was watching the 2001 coin..let it slip by and it sold for 32 bucks. My complete devastation was complete when I tried to find another the same and see they sell for 2-3 hundred dollars  Yes I'm a clown |
