I found this unusual 1955 penny while searching an OBW roll I purchased on the Bay. It appears to have MULTIPLE circular die cracks or breaks on the obverse! What do you guys think? Any thoughts and/or opinions would be greatly appreciated! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Might be a retained interior die break (or multiple of them). A keeper for sure!

If not for the jagged edges I'd say it looks like a strike through of some fibers. If that's die cracking its pretty cool!.. We'll call it the "Ford's Theatre" variety

Cascade: If it was a strike through wouldn't the details be indented and not raised? Or you think it was fused under the metal?
Nice coin! : )

If it was a strike through of hair, fibers, wire, etc that material would be stuck in the metal and raised on the surface in near exact detail of the item but I'm sure that's not what's going on here. Let's wait for the experts to chime in looks like die cracks to me but maybe it's common on a lincoln? I do not know

A few more pics........ There appears to be something going on in the field after IN x GOD x WE. There seems to be die cracks running through most of the letters of LIBERTY. As well as a die crack that runs down through the bust, just in front of VDB, to the rim.

Interesting wheatie. From the 2nd picture it looks like one of those "poor man 1955s" as well. Cool find

Very nice and 2x2 worthy. Many die cracks, kinda common for the year but I have not seen one to that extant. It is also a "poor mans doubled die" The marks by IGWT are flow lines indicating a VLDS. LIBERTY looks really cool, never seen that before. Cool find John1

It is one of the so-called Poor Man's Double Dies and from the photos it appears to be a very late die state. The mint really got all they could out of the dies in '55 and there are several different die crack patterns for this date.

Quote: If it was a strike through of hair, fibers, wire, etc that material would be stuck in the metal and raised on the surface in near exact detail of the item That is a very, very rare occurrence. The overwhelming majority of strikethroughs do not retain the material struck through, and are negatives on the coin. The coin is a *lot* softer than the die and will dent first.

Cool! Thanks guys!
I wonder how many coins were struck after this one, before the run ended with a catastrophic shattered hammer die failure?

Unless I'm mistaken that's the hammer die, isn't it? It's incredible that it stayed in one piece this long, and I can't imagine it lasting much longer. Heck, there may be a spectacular blobhead Lincoln out there somewhere, when some or all of that fell away.

Nice find! I wonder if it was able to even strike another coin before "The Blob" happened. If it did. Something else to keep am eye out for.
