So I was going over a couple of boxes from the attic and came across 8 big, probably silver, coins. I wasn't able to find anything on the internet about them since the only writing on them are some Chinese Republic characters. They do sound like silver and leave that dark grey, silver-specific line when scratched upon a piece of paper, but that's all I know. Hopefully some of you could tell me what they are and if they're worth anything.

1st one (Leonardo Da Vinci 1452-1519 | Ag.? 1 oz | LB | Maja Desnuda):

The side looks like this on all of them, so no need for image.

Curious about the first one (I stopped there) The front shows Da Vinci but the back reclining nude is from a Goya painting. Makes no sense.

@999fine That kinda blew my mind too... I searched more on the internet and actually find the Da Vinci coin is pretty expensive, but the real one. The back with the Goya painting is another coin, expensive as well. People faking could at least try harder, LOL.

@ace_ftw They are magnetic indeed. 1.5" diameter, weighting 19g the 1st one, 24g the 2nd, 23g the 3tr, 22g the 4th and the last 4 22g each.

These are very typical cast forgeries of the type China is famous for. Several of the coins show edge seams where the seam meets the edge or damage that occurred during the edge application to cover the seam.

Easy example - look at the DaVinci coin

Big-Silver-Coins---Fake-Or-Not?

The area marked 1 shows metal that has been dragged over the corner of the coin onto the face (to of the collar ridge) by the post strike edging of the coin to cover the seam.

The area 2 shows that the reeds on the edge were applied after the coin was cast (centrifugal casting). The reeds are incorrectly formed on the photo that is shown - the corners were ground slightly to try to obliterate the split tailed reeds but they didn't quite do the job.

These are the worst sort of cheap fakes to be found on ebay. The color - surface textures - loss of sharp details and the edging are all clues that should be apparent to anyone if they just open their eyes.

Yes, if they stick to a magnet they are fake. As far as scrap metal worth, if they stick to a magnet, they are not only fake but NOT silver, so their scrap metal value is in the pennies each range.
