My current numismatic ventures include adding to my collection of large cents. Currently I am looking at a large number of 1798 to 1807 capped varieties. Why is it that alot of them have (apparently) nail holes in them? I assume that the coins were nailed on a wall or over a door (for luck) or something. Please enlighten me.
Thanks,
Lisa

Ah, I see. That's interesting. So they nailed them on a wall or a door for luck. I never thought of that. When I got a coin with a hole in it I assumed someone tried to make a necklace out of it. Actually I was very happy, because it looked really nice, but I got it for so cheap because the little hole in it lowered the value considerably.

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum!
I remember reading that nailing a cent to a doorway was a good-luck tradition when putting up a new building like a barn. Probably any coin would do for this purpose, but I expect people usually chose cents or Half Cents since they were cheapest.

At one time, it was quite the fashion statement to ware coins as jewelry.

They used to nail them to Barn beams when the Barn was fininshed being built. Houses too. Numismaticly speaking the holed ones are not too desirable unless they are rarities that just happen to have a hole in them. Then again there are collectors who specialize in Holed coins too.

Thanks for the responses!
For an example, see attached pic, the obverse has injury that looks 'pushed' through (not drilled(which includes metal removal)) and the reverse has a mark like it had a nailhead hammered into it...
just my extra thoughts..

Years back, it was a fashion to use the large cents as key fobs in hotels. Little did they know what their value would be...
