In order to keep my mind diverted, I purchased a Dansco Wheat cent 1909-1958 album (#7103). I gathered my numerous rolls of old wheaties, some collected as a kid from change, some purchased at flea markets etc, and begin filling holes. Lots of duplicates, but when I finally got finished getting the best examples in the album, half blind from trying to read those teensy mint marks, here is what I have. I was surprised to find a 1938-S in what looks like mint state red condition, bright with luster. I believe it would slab at a 66. Where did that come from? All the other dates are filled in grades ranging from G4 to MS65, except for the 1909-S, 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922 Plain, and the 1931-S. I didn't expect to find any of the keys and I was right. I am in the process of buying the 1931-S, and the 1909-S. That will leave only three keys, which the cost of acquiring is beyond my means, and would land me in divorce court if I bought them. Like my Buffalo nickel set, I guess I will just have to look at two or three empty holes for a while. Disappointing to get so close to completing a set and than hit the stoppers. Any suggestions on what to do with all the old Lincoln duplicates? I think the recent interest in the Lincoln series is well justified. This little copper has been with us longer than any other US design that I can think of. Still finding ways to have some fun in Oklahoma!

You can certainly put up for sale on this forum or wait until 2009 and sell them. I think duplication is what everyone of us collector have to face.
I am glad to hear your accomplishment on the Lincoln Album. I am planning to do the same. If everything in EF or AU then you are looking at 3K to 5K (using July greysheet pricing).

Excellent....great story! Congrats on the Lincoln collection. Ask for the keys as Christmas presents. Being this close, you really need to finish the set.

Sell your Duplicates and apply the proceeds towards the purchase of the keys. If possible you should try and chase down the 09S-VDB and the 14-D first. The cost of these coins climb much faster than the 09-S or 31-S. Great story and it must have been a blast to work on. I think you did great filling all the holes that you did. Good luck completing the "chase"!Mike

Yeah sell the dupes, and save save save for the keys. That is a fun way to put together a collection, jutt out of stuff you might have or can buy cheap enough. I am doing the State Quarters out of cirulation. No expense at all. In the mean time don't look at those blank holes, put some in reverse up, looks better anyway. Tony

Look at the positive side: the longer you wait, the more rewarding it will be when you complete it. Good luck!

You can always do what I did, fill the 1922 plain hole with a blank planchette. Hey it's "PLAIN" isn't it?
