I just bought on ebay what was advertised as a 1976 40% silver proof Eisenhower. It's edge shows copper. None of the other 40% silver Ikes I have do that -- their edges are white as can be. Is it possible that this is 40% silver, or did I get took? Jan

If there is copper or red on the edges, then yes you did get scammed. Sorry about that... Silver coins are all white/silver

Some of my Kennedy half dollars show slight hints of red around the edge and I know their 40 percent silver. Is there any other way to tell if its silver other than testing the metal?.

In theory, the copper-nickel Ikes should weigh 22.68g and the silver Ikes should weigh 24.59g.

Place a thin layer of tissue paper (Toilet paper 1 layer, you may have to separate it) or facial tissue, 1 layer and get a silver coin and a clad coin and place the unknown Dollar in the middle. If it has silver the color through the paper should be the same as the Silver coin. (White colored.) If it is dark like the clad coin, it is a clad coin. Works for me. Got it, Bilbo. It weighs in at 22.4, according to my little scale. A 1974 I own that I know is 40% silver shows up as 24.6.
I guess I'll send the guy an e-mail and see what he has to say.
Thanks, everybody.

The seller says he sent me the wrong coin and will send me the right one if I send this one back. Just an honest mistake, I suppose. I hope. Jan

At least there sounds like a honest seller on ebay. Hope so for your sake. (Not intending to sound negative.)

Well, here's the happy conclusion: I sent the coin back, the seller sent me the right one and refunded the postage for the return. So, he did make good on it. But down deep in my heart, I wonder if he sent me the clad proof instead of the silver proof because he thought I wouldn't know the difference... Oh, my -- what a skeptical old woman I've become. I doubt it. If he was dishonest he wouldn't have offered the exchange. Usually the seller if he was dishonest, would say you switched it or would have refused a refund/exchange. He did the right thing and made it good. I would stop the worrying and be glad that you got the right coin plus shipping.

Glad everything worked out. Once I received 5 rolls of wheaties and all that arrived at my door was an empty package. Seller made good and resent them at no cost.
