I'm a little dissapointed I didnt notice it at first maybe I was rushed or didnt take the time to look hard enough. I was looking last night and saw "it". at the top of Mr. Lincolns head a small carbon spot. I also noticed 3 more tiny carbon "specs" by the shoulder. it's still graded a pcgs pr69. But is it a bad buy ? I think I'm more upset that I didn't catch it and probably wouldnt have bought it if I did. Maybe the Lincoln has gone through some chemical changes since it was encapsulated. The coloring is funny to the right of the head(maybe reflection) and a spot in the letters above the head by the t. I am assuming the scratches are on the case, not the coin. Mike

Hi Grovey
Hurt the coin !!! those spots ruin the coin, I think I would be looking to send this coin to PCGS for their grade guarantee !!!
Maybe try not to focus on the label on the plastic coffin and take a good hard look at the coin inside !!
Hope this all works out for you !!!

Hi Grovey,
The carbon spot can appear after the coin has been encapsulated. Most collectors think that the slabs are air-tight. There not. At least they weren't the last time I checked. Two other conditions that can cause damage to the coins surface and start the carbon process. Light and moisture. Sunlight through the plastic tends to heat the coin. Even for a very short period. This can cause the surface to break and to start forming carbon spots. It the act of the metal expanding and contracting that causes it.
The only thing that you could do is send it in for restoration. Even then there would be a small hole in the surface where the spot is.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it kills the value.

Is this the same sale? Seems like the spot is mentioned and the sale just started I don't see the coin being sold yet or even bid on. I'm confused. Is this you attempting to re-sell it? Whose pictures are they? They look the same. Mike http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MESE:IT&rd=1On top of that, C/U is discussing the heck(ouch) out of this coin and the way it it was re-listed! http:// (046) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed &threadid=432995

Yes, Mike it is the same coin. I decided that the carbon spot bothered me too much. I listed it on ebay to try and recoup the $ I spent. if it does not sell I may just keep it and try for a trade at the Palm Beach show in Nov. C.U. went over the top w/me on this. Partially my fault. But they roasted me pretty good. Still deciding if I want to go back there.Everyone makes mistakes but there is no reason for that kind of nasty behavior. I emailed susan to get her opinon. She emailed me back and pointed out that while their behavior was bad. they made a few valid points. I do agree with what Susan said about their valid points....the behavior part is another story. I really appreciate the support and honesty I get on this site. While I may not always like the answer it is not done with malice.

Don't worry about CU Groovy, they get like that sometimes. Trust me I've argued on CU before... if I don't like it, they get to know about it. :D
This place is friendlier for sure. :D

Yup! We like everyone here and tend to argue with some sanity from time to time! For the most part this is the only forum where you can get a little off your chest, blow off a little steam, buy, sell and trade without someone slapping your fingers ALL THE TIME!!! I guess most of the folks realize we are all different and we all have different collecting habits and ideas so we put our Two Cents worth in and go from there. One thing is for certain if any of us knew it all we wouldn't be here would we? Nope we would be wallowing up to our necks in riches and until that day arrives I am here to stay!

AWWWWWWWWWWW... Thank you very much for all your support. I really enjoy being here. I went to go on CU just to see if the topic died and I couldnt log on. I was reading today and read that the site was down...As bad as this sounds, I wouldnt want anyones site to crash ..but maybe it was the "computer gods" getting back at all the mean people on the chat room. they were crying they had nothing else too do last night. I thought to myself. if this is ALL you have to do..thats pretty sad.

Grovey, remember there are a lot of eyes out there. You are 4th page news on C/U. The bashers are done ripping and the good folks have forgiven and forgotten. A good rule, be as ethical doing business as you want that business done to you. Next time those folks get to slapping have that beautiful Saint give you a big kiss. I'm sure it will drown away your tears! LOL We're glad your here. Mike

grovey I'm sorry about your loss or possible loss but that is yet another problem with high grade coins: There is only one direction their state of preservation is going to go. And with red copper--in Florida of all places--there is so much riding on just one spot showing up. If you make the assumption that the preservation is going to go down somewhat no matter how well you take care of your coins then ask your self if you would notice or even care about a carbon spot on a brown EF-45 Lincoln? It can be a disaster on high grade coin. Is it a disaster on a brown EF-45? Happy hunting at the WPB show. Did you make it to the F.U.N show?

I have to agree with longnine. I myself live in a rather old and humid house and in the past I've lost coins due to humidity issues. Copper coins and base metal coins tend to develop verdigris round these parts. So I do don't purchase base metal coins if I can avoid it. Copper coins I tend to avoid. I love copper coins with full lustre but there's not much point me buying them to be honest. So apart from some really modern stuff from the 1970s and early 80s, I tend to stick to middle grade copper if I simply must have a piece of a certain issue. That way if it turns it's not so bad.
