Hello, I am writing to let you know that I have found an extremely RARE (RDV-006, DIE 2) I found this coin in an circulated roll from my local bank. I would like you all to go to www.varietyvista.com to veiw my find and so you could learn about what to look for. I really think that not many know about this RARE variety and what to look for on the coin, so if you go there you will see my name and my photos of the coin James Wiles posted for me. Thank you and hope all had a great thanks giving!. Patrick Edited by 300 coin guy 11/23/2007 12:56 pm

chrsb, Thank you very much...and yes it is really RARE!!...i was so surprised to have found it I had to look at it 7 times to make sure it was what I had found. Then I went to the site and compared it with the first 1988-P that was found and then I knew I had a great find.

Gary, I asked James that and I gave him my opion on what the value is. I told James that I would think since this is an EXTREMELY RARE variety that the 1992 Close AM would be a coin to compare price, and I seen them go for $2,100.00 and then James replyed to me and told me that woould be a good coin to compare it with. So as I know it could be that are even more. Patrick

Nice Find,
I just want to clarify so there is no confusion. I think you meant to put 1988 -P as the subject not D. I don't think any of these have surfaced on D mint 1988 pieces yet:-)
BUT...I am trying to find some:-)
Thanks, Bill

Congrats on your find! I'm glad you found this, it's like another treasure to hunt for when searching through rolls.
Just to make sure of some things: So anything below 1989 with flared initials are the ones to keep? Is the picture shown in the link your coin, or another?

so now we have a member that has found the First coin of its kind and another member that has found the Second of its kind, pretty cool for such a small forum (compared to other larger forums where you just don't see this kind of thing)

Hi, I would like some clarification on this variety from a normal 1988 cent? I really can't tell the difference or probably am looking at the wrong things. Can someone explain the differences to this n00b?

Sleaklight, First of all the coin is a very RARE transitional die that means it is a RDV-006 and this die was used in the following year 1989. So the designer's initals has the flared G instead of the RDV-005 reverse. If you go to the variety vista site and click on the Lincoln Cent rdv's and go to the one with the year 1989 you will see the difference in the intials. Look on my coin there at the close up of the designer's intials and you will see it is thicker also. I hope this helps you also to know what you are looking for. Happy hunting. Patrick
