Krause lists this coin as a pattern for the gold ducat. Is it actually a pattern? About the size of a iickel, it is an exact copy of the gold ducat commemorating the 50th year of reign of Carl Theodor only in silver. Were these issued as souvenirs or what?

"Pattern" may not be the best word to describe what we used to call OMS "Off metal strike" coins when I was with KP. Coins like this were valued and circulated based on their metallic weight(value). An OMS like this was probably struck to order for gifting or presentations. Just my opinion.
