Interesting, I just found an example of (partial) double CANADA and DATE. Only 1867 is doubled.

Machine or Mechanical Doubling, not actual doubling.

To clarify, Machine Doubling is actual doubling but isn't a "double die".

Machine Doubling can still be neat, even if it's not a standard variety.

Machine Doubling is more of an error introduced by the machinery. A "double" die is a variety because it happens during the actual striking process and the mintmnaster has OK'd the process of modifying the hub or the die. MD does not involve any modifications to the die or hub ... all you have to do to eliminate it is to tighten the screws or keepers that hold the die in place.
