These articles always seem like basically random selections - some are new, some are older, some have a low face value, some have a high face value...

America is just unlucky to have the world's blandest money, so my theory is that almost any foreign banknote from the last few decades look exciting in comparison, hence these seemingly randomly selected lists published by American websites.

Wow, I'm surprised that the Rp 100000 made the list. To me banknote series post-2000 is the most bland Indonesian banknote series (or it just seems bland to me because that's what I spend on a daily basis back home). They should have picked something from the 80s or 90s.

I like that Costa Rican note, but I think the 5-colones from the 1980s was even nicer!

That's just because you're used to the design! I always thought Canadian notes were boring until I looked at them properly. I really like the Rp100,000 for a few reasons.

- Full text of the Declaration of Independence: I've always appreciated the to-the-point brevity of this particular declaration. Three sentences, two signatures, done.

- Map of Indonesia: I have a little collection of geographical coins and notes (Brazil and Bosnia are the most prolific when it comes to coins with maps, notes with maps are more common and usually more interesting) and this would fit in it perfectly.

- High face value, low exchange value: it's fun to have a note that's worth 100,000 of anything and it's even better that it doesn't cost very much, either.

It's true that it's probably the note with the most symbolism. I might be biased though since I'm not a fan of polymer notes, I don't like pink, and I don't usually bother to analyse little things.

It may not get you much today, but if I remember correctly inflation in 1997-8 was over 350%. The exchange for 1 USD was Rp 2500-ish before the crisis, I think.

Always found the series kind of monotonous, I prefer the previous one (except for the Rp 20000, which is all green and has silly misshapen students on its reverse). It either looks more colourful to my eye or just nostalgia, this was the money I spent during primary school.

I like them colourful for some reason, which is why I expected something like the older French banknotes to make the list.

I doubt the 2014 edition will make it as a "most beautiful banknote" though. The yellow streak they added makes it look really weird. Still, I hope I can get my hands on a bill or two when I go back over the Summer.

Wow. That's one boring space filler article. Looks like they googled "foreign banknotes" and loaded the first ten pictures. None of them are as good as any one of Lucky's trains. And the entire 1974 Bahamas series as well. Love that series - all stodgy and formal on the front and blazing color local scenes on the back.
