After Good Friday worship services tonight I stopped by the local Culver's (a midwest U.S. hamburger chain, for those who may not have any in their part of the world) to get something to eat.

As I was standing at the counter waiting for my food I happened to glance down at the clear plastic container where people can drop in their change to help out a local charity.

A coin on top of the pile of change caught my eye. I bent down low to look at it, then explained to the curious girl behind the counter who was watching me, that someone had dropped an old coin into the container.

There, on top of the pile, was a well-worn Indian Head cent. From what I could tell, without turning the donation box around, it looked to be either an 1896 or 1898. I mentioned this to the girl and she actually looked interested.

I wonder where that old Indian came from.

The person who put it in there probably just got it in change and wasn't even aware he had it. It boglgles my mind to think of that same scenario of someone not being aware of being in possession of that coin for approximately 117 years before ending up in that box and being discovered by you.

The last time I got silver was in change at a restaurant three years ago. The waitress didn't know what a silver dime was. Just another Roosevelt. She didn't get it back in her tip.

Sometimes I long for a Culvers again. Or a Waffle House...or a Skyline Chili...or a Steak n Shake.... But I have no desire to see an Illinois blizzard or Indiana thunderstorm again. You have to put up with the bad weather to get the good fast food.

We were at culvers yesterday also, but I didn't look in the donation jar. Wonder if they put the IHC in there on purpose?
