Hi everyone!
I did a search on the forum to see if I could find any info on Biblical coins... nothing turned up... I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post but the time period seems right...
What I mean by "Biblical" is coins from that era & areas mentioned in the Bible. Does anyone specifically collect something along these lines? Where would be a place to start? I have been on ebay... and I have found some that I am interested in but have no idea who is reputable or more importantly not reputable as a seller... since I know nothing it would be fairly easy to sell me something less than desirable.

Specifically I was looking at a Widow's Mite and a Pontius Pilate Prutah to start with...? and then I thought I would try to find coins from the cities and provinces mentioned like Ephesus, Corinth, Galatia, Philippi, Colosse, Thessalonica, Crete... so on and so forth... what do you think?

I think I'm sorry I read this thread. Sounds like a great idea, but I've got too many projects on the go. Can't afford to start another one. I say go for it, but you have to come back and posts pics, so the rest of us can live vicariously through your collection.

Collecting biblical coins is a popular area. There is a great book on it "Guide to Biblical Coins" written by Dave Hendin, who also has a shop at http://www.amphoracoins.com/

To search for biblical coins go to V-coins and use the search function, you will find many coins!

I collect ancient coins generally, and don't focus on "biblical coins". Indeed, I tend to steer away from them, mainly because such coins are more keenly sought after, and therefore more expensive.

The "tribute penny" is a classic example. The common denarius of Tiberius should be one of the cheapest of the Twelve Caesars to obtain, if supply was the only factor to consider. But these coins are made five, ten times more expensive, for this one reason: high demand from "biblical coin" collectors. Not only was Tiberius mentioned by name in the bible, but these very coins are mentioned ("Show me the coin used to pay the tax"). At least, that's how they're marketed. Some scholars disagree as to what kind of coin the "real tribute penny" would actually have been.

Likewise, coins from cities mentioned in the bible are more expensive than equally rare (or common) coins from cities which aren't.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

YES! In fact take a look at my online gallery here. I started to "specialize" in this area. I added another Pontius Pilate that I plus an awesome Bar Kochba coin recently. Check out my gallery at: http://www.coincommunity.org/galler...hp?cat=10162

I just added the Bar Kochba coin. That coin is in immaculate condition and very difficult to find in that grade for any decent pricing. I got lucky with that one. I love both of my Pontius Pilate coins, but the simpulum (ladle) coin is quite remarkable for its detail. Usually, that coin comes pretty wiped out.

I love ancient coins! I have a few Judean coins. The "widow's mite" is one of the most popular, and also most common ancient coins available. You can find very nice quality "mites" for $20 and even less. Coins like a Pontius Pilate would command a very high premium. I'm guessing the cheapest would run about $200.

Actually you can get a coin issued under Pontius Pilate for very cheap. Below is a link to some of these coins with prices realized. I think the cheapest was $10, but there were quite a few in the $30 range. Of course, prices increase with condition.

Actually there is an example of a Pontius Pilate coin on Vcoins right now for under $30 and a couple more in the $40 range...and many under $100!

The Wildwinds prices realized, though, were for E-bay.

and remember, as I said earlier,"prices increase with condition."

Okay, yes, you can buy a POS with little or no detail showing for $5, but there's a reason it's so cheap. If you want any level of decent detail and problem-free material, you're looking at $90++.

Please note that I have already mentioned that condition is a factor for the price!

The venue that you are looking on to make a purchase is also a factor.
