I am going to send some gold coins into NGC for grading. They have maximums for value depending on the category you submit under. For example, the specialty gold limit is $1,500. Does this mean what I think the coin is worth, or what it would be worth depending on what grade it receives? Or if I think it's worth more than that, I need to go up a level to Express with a limit of $3,000. Or should I just submit them all under the $1,500 limit and see what they say and decide?

NGC, as with most reputable TPG's are primarily seeking an approximate value for insurance purposes. Just take your best guess. As you well know, one grade point on certain coins can raise the value exponentially. I have never had a problem with PCGS, NGC or ANAC'S giving my honest best estimation on values. Mike

I have assumed that the estimate of value was both to get an accurate grading cost and to cover them in case the coin is damaged or lost. If you put a value of $800 and somehow in the process the coin is lost or mishandled/damaged, you wouldn't get more than $800 for it. When I have filled out forms in the past, I have used various measures of value. For coins to which I have a minimal emotional attachment, I have used as a value what I paid for it, for others, I have gone higher.

in other words don't send a wire edge saint gaudens that you think will grade MS-68 and put a value of $1500.00 on it to send it the cheapest way cause theres a chance you will get a check for $1500.00 in the mail instead of your coin. You have to determine the value you think it would cost to replace the coin (in your opinion) and I have never heard of a case where they disagree with your estimate but I am sure they may buck on you if you try to do as the example above or they may decide to just buy it from you for the 1500 nah, I don't think they would do that but just about guarantee SGS or NNC would. But chances are they would want a higher grading fee for the coin if it was worth alot more than your estimate, but like I said I don't remember ever hearing of this happening
