This coin came out of a roll from that hoard my wife's great-grandmother had in her house. I am casually going through the 24 rolls of silver quarters which haven't been opened or looked at since the mid-60's when they were rolled after she passed away. Needless to say there are many Mint State coins since she'd get them and put them in a cigar box for safekeeping...and it looks like 1964 was a busy year for her!

I found this unique specimen. The positioning of the bump really is neat. You can see what I call from the title.

There is a line of damage on the front edge of the nose. It looks like something that is very common. The coin appears to have had the metal moved as it was hit by the reeded edge of another coin.

An interesting location but probably damage nonetheless.

Thanks,
Bill

I thought that too at first but there is no gouge or contact near it to move that much silver into a nice oval ball forming it's own outcrop.

I went to Radio Shack and got a lighted 60x - 100x portable microscope for $11 (mainly because I wanted one and this was a good excuse to get one) So I located the area and put my camera over the eye of the microscope (big balancing act) and took these pictures.

The orientation is the obverse is upside down. The first on is the 60x, the tip of the nose is left top (northeast) with the bridge running down the right side, to the 10 o'clock position is the start of the nostril running southwest-west. You can see the small bag mark just southeast-south of the bump and the last two are at 100x. See if you don't agree this wasn't formed by contact from other coins...I wish I could get a profile view to show the height? Could this possibly be a concave spot on the die to create this little ball?

This is one of those situations where too much is too little:-) They are great pictures by the way, but being that close doesn't give a good view of the area around it so it is really tough to formulate another opinion by looking at it.

Is there any way to back it out a little to show a little more of the nose where that spot is?

I know what you are saying, Bill! Used the same method just holding my 8x glass. Hope this helps and I appreciate your time!

Howdy, Using your picture for reference, and then looking at me artistic concoction here:-) I placed arrows around the area that still appears to be moved metal. I outlined the area where I think the metal was moved from. In your picture you can see the slight depression from which the lump was created.

I still think it's a "hit" that moved the metal. There is an outside chance it is the result of a die chip but I still don't think so.

Thanks,
Bill
