I was looking for a 1960 un-circulated set on ebay but could only find them in a white card bard stock covered in plastic. After an ebay search for 1661 un-circulated set I found plenty of examples of coins in a brown envelope. Did the brown envelope thing start in '61 or are older examples really rare?

1961 was the beginning of sets in pliofilm, 1953-60 were housed in white card.

However the cellophane wrap was used for single dollars up to 1962 and again for the type 3 and 4 PL 1965 dollars.

Possibly the 1962 PL dollars came both ways, I just have never seen any cellophane wrapped 1962. I do know some came in pliofilm.

I bought an original boxed lot of 25 single 1962 dollars in cello at Long Beach in the mid 1980s.

That could very well be true because I have only ever seen two other than mine 1962 Plioflim issued 1962 PL dollars. That would tell me the majority of 1962 PL dollars were probably cellophane issue as the pliofilm issued are from what I have seen scarce.
