I have an undated Buffalo nickel but the obverse side is struck with a man in a hat rather than an indian. Any ideas?

It's called a Hobo Nickel. Someone carved it.

Some are very nice and some aren't. Post a pix.

Thanks, Bilbo and Error, for the welcome, info, and hyperlink. It's one of the original hobo nickels and it's in pretty good (xf/ef) condition. I'll try to start posting photos of my coins; however, my camera aint always cooperative with pixel clarity.

Just be aware that they are still made today. Experts know the original designs so well that they can tell you if it is an older one or a contemporary one. Either way, ts a nice find:-) If we see a picture, at some point we might be able to find out if it is older or not.

Whether old or contemporary, they are still done using an Indian head (Buffalo)Nickel.

Found, some of the nicest and most expensive ones are carved today. It's all in the art.

Errorcoins, Absolutely! There's nothing wrong with the contemporary ones. There are beautiful pieces that are made.

Specialists (I am not one) often categorize them in their collections based upon when they were made.

The story behind them makes a difference. The older ones were supposedly carved by hobos and the value of the art would be used , in a sense, to purchase the hobo some provisions or a meal worth beyond what five-cents would normally have purchased.

Contemporary ones don't have that lore attached to them but they are excellent pieces of art none the less.
