I am curious about how rare Indian coin errors are, I have noticed that they are pretty plentiful and fairly cheap on ebay and sometimes even sold in lots. Feel free to call me Will.

Quote:I am curious about how rare Indian coin errors are, I have noticed that they are pretty plentiful and fairly cheap on ebay and sometimes even sold in lots. Let's just say around 15 or so years ago when ebay was going global, I would bid & receive most of the error coins I bid on. After a few months, I contacted the seller directly and was able to purchase error coins in 1,000 coin lots (don't remember what I paid), and after receiving the 1st 1,000 coin lot, I purchased a few more. After picking out what I considered the best (I had a ebay coin store til April 2006) for inventory, I would list the balance of them back on ebay in lots of 250, 500 & 1,000 error coin lots, and let them go cheap... That was when ebay was a great place, and being a dealer back then, I was able to track other ebay Coin Dealers bidder pages, and would outbid well known Dealers numerous times by one bid above there top bid (knowing that dealers were only going to bid high enough where they can turn the lot over for a quick profit).. My Avatar, a 2003D Quadstrike was a unique USA error since the Mint made changes I assume in late 2001 or early 2002 making errors almost impossible (compared to the late 1990's to 2001), and what I consider expensive at that time, but bid high enough that the underbidder is a top known Error Dealer, Publisher, and I believe a past ANA President.

I used to collect the mis-struck (brockages, double strikes, and off-centers) of British India. I had a large collection. I sold most about 5 years ago. Perhaps coincidentally, about that time, excellent fake Rupee brockages began appearing on the market (on ebay). I feel that the error coins of India are well worth collecting, but be very careful about rupee obverse brockages. Bill

Russian? Did you say Russian? You and I think alike! I was 'into' Russian copper and silver errors of the Tsars. Still have a few of the big 5 Kopek off-centers, but frankly, they are the most common of the errors of that country. My brockages, etc, flew off to sunny California early this month! I miss them already. Hang in there! Bill

As a collector I would say that the Indian coin mints are working so heavily on production my biggest problem is finding a coin that is well struck, centered and not messed up. I was keeping Grease Filled Dies and off centers for a while, as I pulled them out of the junk bin, but after a while I just traded them off as I was getting so many of them.
