Let's say I have lots of rolls of beautiful 1964 silver quarters. Let's tell me the best way to determine if any of them are SMS. I have read about 15 different websites that try to explain the best way to identify SMS coins and, VIOLIN!, none help me very much. Can you?

Well, since SMS sets were only issued from 1965-67, the odds of any of your 1964s being SMS is about zero. There might be a few known specimens but that is like finding a copper 1943 Lincoln or a silver 1965 quarter- next to impossible.

To start with, odds are that you have uncirculated coins.
In 1964 the mint did produce proof coins, and yes, some SMS pieces.
However, they are VERY rare( a word that I do not use very often).

Are you referring to the SMS reverse found on 1964-D quarters ? I just posted on this subject the other day when I finally found my type C reverse. Since the obverse design stayed the same in 1965, is the Type C reverse 64-D considered a SMS piece ?

If this is not the case then I would be interested in an explanation of this particular type.
