I read that as many as 30-50 1933 $20 double eagles possibly existed after the majority were melted. Does anybody know how many have been recovered by the U.S. Treasury? Of those recovered, how many are known to have been destroyed? Anybody know?

Hi! The last that I read the Fed's say there were 25 coins "removed" illegally. Two went to the Smithsonian, One was allowed as a gift to King Farouk(later privately sold, the so called "only Legal one to own". Nine others "recovered" in the 1940's were melted, then recently 10 were turned over to the Fed's. That leaves 3 "out there" somewhere. This is one of twenty versions I have have read so don't hold me to it as fact!!!!! Mike

This Philadelphia Enquirer piece was well written. https://goccf.com/t/2101
In it a contempory of Switt's cliams that he had 25. 19 of those are accounted for, according to the numbers in the article.

Thanks, I couldn't get to the aricle unless I register and sign in. So, I guess if I want to read the article that's what I'll have to do.

20c-I cut and pasted the article. The reporter seems to actually understand the scenario!
