Anyone else get discouraged with this hobby?

I haven't bought anything in a couple of months. I've been working on Lincolns (before they go through the roof like everyone says they will) and the prices seem to be going up faster than gas prices anymore. I'm just having a tough time rationalizing spending the extra bucks and getting less and less enthusiastic about buying coins anymore.

Anyone else experience this or is it just me?

TSOLT:
It seems that you are collecting for the wrong reasons here. Are you trying to make a profit here, or do you enjoy coins no matter what their worth?

Also, you said something along the lines of not buying a coin in a few months. Maybe if you purchase a coin of a new type set, this may help to respark your interest.

I would hate for anyone to completely loose interest in this great hobby. But if you can take my advise of purchasing a few coins (don't have to be expensive) and if need be, take a small break.

I always want to buy the expensive ones
but can not afford them
so sometimes I buy the ones I like-

other times I save up and get a nice coin

Remember it should be a hobby not an obsession

which I think I have.

Hi TSOTL,

Like Arthrene said, rolls search is a fun and expensive way to enjoy the hobby and not loosing your mortgage payments. I am working on my Lincoln Album too, but it's not the only coin series I buy. I also work on my Mercury, Roosevelt, proof set, mint set, star notes, foreign coins/notes, Kennedy, etc. Also, the other side of this hobby is the fun and gratification in "treasure/deal hunting". There are always coins that are within your price range and condition, it's just take time and patient to find it.

Good luck.

I experienced it on weekly basis until I realized that as long as I was playing by the "rules" of others, (especially as they pertain to grading U.S coins,) I was not going to be happy.

I'd rather collect things that I like but no one else likes or even knows about. I hate crowds, wherever they go the games and mantras always follow, no matter how silly or illogical. If you put the #1 Mantra: "buy the coin and not the slab" into Bluejay's head, that sucker would fly backwards and upside down.

As for Lincoln cents I'd rather collect the BIEs and other failed die errors on them rather than the cents themselves. Not many people care about them or even know what they are. And the grade is not that critical. Why should I follow Mantra #2: "always buy the highest grade you can find" when it's not necessary. I won't see anything more on a MS70 Lincoln BIE than an EF45.

TSOTL, there are always runs of bad luck and everything I want seems over priced, but then it changes and the deals seem to fall out of the sky. Give it a little time. Also, try something new. I am always energized by going to an estate auction selling coins. There seems to always be bag lots that go cheap and are great fun going thru. You might give that a try.

I collected as a kid, then I found girls and 4 wheel drive trucks. I stopped for 25 years.

Then with the birth of my daughter, I bought her a Morgan from 100 years earlier then her birth year. Then I bought more Morgans. Then I realized I could complete the set with my funds. Then I bought Silver Proof sets until they got to expensive for the older sets. Then I found error coins which has turned into an obsession. Now that is all I buy. The types of errors and their pricing is limitless. A very cool and exciting and growing field.

errror

I also bought some older us commemorative half dollars in MS grades, I love the designs on these and some have very low mintages.

Hey, TSOTL, don't give up the ship just yet. Everyone goes through periods when their enthusiasm for a hobby wanes just a little bit. (That's why I have at least four hobbies...I keep jumping from one to another as my interests shift in any given month or time of year.)

As others have mentioned, good deals tend to run in streaks. Recently two or three months went past where I could hardly find a coin to buy, or even a star note or cool serial numbered note to pull from circulation. It always turns around though, and suddenly two or three or more coins you've been searching for will suddenly be there at prices you are happy with.

Oh yeah! We all do I bet. I found that working on one series got way too boring for me, even when buying other coins to keep my mind busy. I have been in and out of collecting for 35 years I think. I am doing a State Quarter folder from cirulation and sometimes I get more enjoyment from going through my change jar than buying a coin I really need. I buy very rarely I do more reading than buying and this way I find things that interest me.

Good luck, Tony

Thanks, it's good to know I'm not the only one.

Maybe I'm just bored. I dunno. I guess it'll work itself out or whatever eh?

Keep that attitude. Sell everything or just take to a bank. Stop collecting. Much, much more for me. Then contact all your friends and tell them to NOT collect coins. Even more for me.

Bored? But what about "the thrill of the hunt?"

Give the boot to coin collecting mantras and the Great Expectations they lead to and you'll see more clearly what you really like. If it leads to collecting something that others think is "junk", that's their problem.

Just walk away and find something else that interests you.
Maybe start collecting elongated cents? Cheap, fun and lots to learn.

I have "a lot" of coins to go through yet this winter (it's snowing now !) I like to get a "batch" and then wait a couple of months to go through it. Then I'm re-invigorated ! I'll sit for hours pouring over my Wheats or IP's or Buff's with the anticipation of finding a key or semi-key date ! And it happens usually. I bought a thousand Wheats for $50.00 at an estate auction once and it was sooo much fun going through them with my light and mag glass. I've got 150 Buffalo nickles and 50 Indian Heads (all dates readable on Buffs) to go through at my leisure this winter and I'm getting excited about it ! But yeah the "fun" in the hobbie shouldn't always evolve and graduate into the most expensive stuff !
