My first coin purchase in a couple of months. I've been wanting to check out this seller, who seems to consistently offer nice coins. As is my usual habit, I sniped it out from under a bidder who turned out to be Jim1953, so the win is kinda bittersweet. :( In-hand, the coin is close enough to the seller's representation for me to trust that aspect. However, I note that, in addition to the carbon spots I saw in the auction, there are a couple of spots which are likely verdigris. Action will probably have to be taken to mediate that. Presented are fullsize shots for grading, and a couple of details for attribution. I'm thinking that the recut 1, and the die file lines thru the N in ONE, should pretty well nail this one. Help?

I'm not an expert in these large cents, so take my opinion with a giant grain of salt. I don't know when I'm looking at a weak strike versus real wear, but it seems there is flattening of the hair above the ear and along the brow that is consistent with wear and tear from circulation. Also, there is less detail in the leaves than what one would see in a well-struck and uncirculated coin. So...I would peg this at EF-45, but could be swayed to call it AU-50 by those more knowledgeable than I. Nice, nice coin. I don't have the references to do an attribution. Congratulations.

I would call it AU50-AU55. There is some wear to the right of her ear, I can not tell on the curls if there is wear or not, if there is then AU50. The reverse I can see some on the high points of the leaves but the bow looks like there is no wear so it would go closer to AU55.

It looks like the strike is not quite as strong as it could be, but it also looks like a little bit of rub above the ear. I'd put it into the AU range. I can't help with attribution because I don't have a decent library, although I'm hoping to get some books for Xmas.

I think Xf would actually have really visible wear in all facets of the hair, so I am inclined to definitely go higher than that. My guess honestly is a very low mint state strictly due to a weak strike. If there is wear above the ear, maybe AU55 or AU58, but again, I think it may just be a strike issue. Even with the carbon spots, a nice coin Dave. $70 $90?

More like $61. I'm still undecided as to the quality of my rip. Here's the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WON.m313.lVIThere's a rather sneaky piece of detail on the part of the seller - note that his choice of lighting, one light from about 1:00, tends to mask the hit in the lower right quadrant of the rim. My lighting, two from 10:00 and 2:00, tend to magnify it. The hit is more shallow on the rim than my pic makes it look, and it does nothing to my personal opinion of the coin, but I don't know if it would slab as a result. If it did, my guess is it'd see AU50.

First grade, I'm on the fence for AU. Your pics are better than the sellers, naturally, and though a great coin it is not quite what I thought it was. 45 to 50 I use John Grellman's book and from what I see it is clearly a Newcomb-33. This makes it a 5 and at the top on the rarity scale. That helps off set the rim ding a bit. Hey, I'm going snipe hunting, anyone want to come along? Aaaa how about you, Dave, I need someone to hold the bag. Jim

I am so glad you showed your pictures of a coin you got from this seller because this is a seller I have been watching also because he seems to have some of the coins I need at times I am looking for them but was always kind of weary about his pictures and usually the coins I want everyone else wants also and goes higher than I am willing to take a chance on

Bryan, I'm still undecided about this seller. I left him Positive Feedback - I think he deserves it - but I wouldn't recommend a rookie shop with him, you know?

Not to hijack the thread, but Hey Jim, it seems like Dad read this thread and has given you a little nudge to buy one of these with the featured auction right now!! That is unless Dave needs two of them.

I think your right, Tights. I have one in about this condition, though. I was trying to upgrade with the one from this thread. And you know, once a snipe, always a snipe. Jim

Dave, your photos are SOOOO good that this one was easy to attribute. You have an 1851 N-33, Die State A. Now, hang on to your hat (and the coin!) because it's a rarity R-5. And if that wasn't enough, the die state is also rare. That's a keeper, my friend !!
