Rob, it is zinc over steel. in 1943, due to the need for copper for shell casings, the treasury decided to make them out of something else.
Jim

P.S. if you find one in copper (there are a few) get excited.

1943 is the only year the steel cent was produced and even though they are a one year type they aren't rare at all

I buy a bunch of them for USD$0.25 each and spend them. People look at them, shrug, and put them in the cash-register.

I hope you aren't saying you are paying 25 times face for them and spending them for face because that is a great way to go broke fast

These coins while they were minted in the hundreds of millions can be very rare in the very high grades ,, these coins were particularly susceptible to the environment and did not last long in mint condition if improperly stored ,, and then add to that the millions which have been re plated ruining their numismatic integrity ,,the very high grade original cents can be considered to be fairly rare .

I keep about 50 of them (mostly good grades) in plastic tubes just for the heck of it......they're neat.....they're historical........and they're unlike any of the other pennies. I don't keep them to become a millionaire off of them......they're just cool and deserve to be in my collection for that reason alone ! Maybe once they're 100 hundred years old they'll be a little more valuable. My kids or grandkids or surely "somebody" will appreciate the ones I have someday long after I'm gone.
