My wife and I were in England a couple years ago, and brought back numerous coins. In addition, our youngest son is currently teaching in England and recently mailed me some 20 Pence coins because he knows I really like them.

Several questions about the Twenty Pence.

1. When were they first minted, and are they still minted each year.
2. Are they the same each year, or have some years been commemorative?
3. I prefer Dansco Albums. Does anyone know if Dansco makes an album for the Twenty Pense? If not, are there other companies which make albums for the Twenty Pence?

Any answers would be appreciated.

The Twenty Pence coin was introduced in June 1982 to fill the gap between 10p and 50p. It was first minted in 1982. The reverse design has been the same through out the run of the series, although the Queen's portrait has changed twice, leaving three varieties to collect.

1. First type
Obv: First Portrait, inscription ELIZABETH II above D. G. REG. F. D. below
Rev: Crowned Tudor Rose, 20 below, date above and inscribed TWENTY PENCE.
The border inscriptions are incuse.
Issued from 1982 to 1984.

2. Second type
Obv: Second Portrait, inscription ELIZABETH II above D. G. REG. F. D. below
Rev: Crowned Tudor Rose, 20 below, date above and inscribed TWENTY PENCE.
The border inscriptions are incuse.
Issued from 1985 to 1997. The 1986 coin was only available in Mint or Proof Sets. The 1996 version exists as a silver proof.

3. Third type
Obv: Third Portrait, inscription ELIZABETH II above D. G. REG. F. D. below
Rev: Crowned Tudor Rose, 20 below, date above and inscribed TWENTY PENCE.
The border inscriptions are incuse.
Issued for circulation from 1998 to 2006.
20p coins dated 2007 are available in proof and uncirculated Royal Mint sets.

The full designation of the reverse is 'The Badge of England, a royally crowned double rose', and it was designed by William Gardner.

I read a title in Coin World magazine that the British Designs are going to change for the first time since Decimalisation, although I didn't get to read the article.

Also, if you love the British 20p coins, there are some others that you'd like as well. I know Gibraltar uses the same basic design and planchet, but has their own reverse design.

Yes, the British coins 1p to 1 pound are to be changing in "late spring 2008" though how long before they are in circulation is unsure, normally we see normal denominations around the middle of the year, with the special 2 pound coins they have not been seen (by me at least) for this year yet!

There are lots of different areas whose coinage is similar to that of the UK, there is the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Gibralter, Assention and Falkland islands and there could be a few others that may creep in every so often, though these are not so normal for 20p, the 1 pound coins are the most seen.

There are also a few boring errors, though we are not used to too many errors in our coinage, I think the collectors get to them long before they reach my out of the way place.

Rest in Peace
